Clean Window Without Windex: 5 Better, Streak-Free Alternatives
We’ve all been there — standing in the cleaning aisle, eyeing up a bottle of Windex, wondering if it’s really worth it. Truth is, you don’t need Windex to get sparkling clean windows. In fact, there are plenty of options that work just as well — if not better — especially for Perth’s dry, dusty conditions.
Whether you're avoiding harsh chemicals, ran out of cleaner, or just want something better, here’s how to get that crystal-clear finish without the blue stuff.
Why Skip Windex?
Nothing against it, but:
-
It can leave a filmy residue (especially on hot glass in the sun)
-
It’s not great for tinted windows
-
It contains ammonia, which can be harsh on skin, paint, and the environment
Plus, it’s just not necessary when better (and often cheaper) alternatives are within reach.
1. Soapy Water (The Pro’s Choice)
Yep — good ol’ dish soap and water is what we use on the job. Not too bubbly, just a few drops in a bucket of warm water.
-
Cuts through grease and dust
-
Won’t leave streaks if you finish with a squeegee
-
Super affordable and safe on most surfaces
Pro tip: Use a microfiber cloth or a squeegee — paper towel is the enemy of a clean window!
2. Vinegar & Water Mix (With Caution)
As we mentioned in the last blog, vinegar has some uses — mostly for indoor windows or lighter cleaning jobs.
💧 Mix: 1 part white vinegar + 1 part distilled water
Avoid on tinted or stone-framed windows.
Not great for tackling serious grime or salt marks, but okay in a pinch.
3. Rubbing Alcohol Solution
For a streak-free finish, a mix of rubbing alcohol and water works wonders.
🧪 Mix: 1 cup water, 1 cup isopropyl alcohol, 1 tbsp white vinegar
This combo evaporates fast, so it's perfect for quick cleans. Ideal for mirrors, car windows, and glass doors.
4. Store-Bought Eco Glass Cleaners
There are loads of ammonia-free, biodegradable cleaners that outperform Windex these days. Look for brands that are:
-
Streak-free
-
Safe for pets and kids
-
Environmentally friendly
You can usually find these at Bunnings, eco-stores, or online.
5. Hire a Pro (Like Zippy’s 😉)
Sometimes, the best alternative to Windex is just not doing it yourself. If the grime’s baked on, your time’s tight, or you want that spotless finish — give us a shout.
