Why Clean Window Screens? (Hint: It’s Not Just for Looks)
Let’s be honest — window screens don’t get the love they deserve. Most people barely notice them until they’re caked in dust or full of cobwebs. But if you’ve ever cleaned your windows only to find they still look a bit dull or hazy, your screens are probably the real culprit.
As a window cleaner here in Perth, I can tell you this: clean screens make a huge difference — not just for how your windows look, but for your health and home too.
So… Why Bother Cleaning Them?
1. Clearer Views
Even the cleanest glass can look foggy if there’s a dirty screen in front of it. Dust, dirt, and sea salt (especially here along the WA coast) build up fast and dull the view. Clean screens let all that natural light shine in.
2. Fresher Air
When you open your windows, air passes through the screens. If they’re dirty, that means you’re breathing in trapped dust, pollen, mould spores, and who-knows-what else. A clean screen = cleaner air inside.
3. Extend the Life of Your Screens
Screens aren’t cheap to replace. Built-up grime can weaken the mesh, cause corrosion, and shorten their lifespan. A quick clean every now and then keeps them in top shape.
4. Keep Your Windows Cleaner, Longer
Dirty screens trap moisture and splash back onto your glass when it rains — making your freshly cleaned windows dirty again. Cleaning screens reduces this and keeps everything looking fresher for longer.
How Often Should You Clean Window Screens?
Here in Perth, with all the coastal winds, red dust, and bushland pollen, we recommend cleaning your screens at least twice a year — ideally in spring and autumn.
If you live near the beach or in a high-dust area? You might want to do it every 3–4 months.
Quick & Easy Screen Cleaning Tips
-
Remove the screen if you can.
-
Give it a gentle brush or vacuum to knock off dry dust and cobwebs.
-
Rinse it with a hose or warm water.
-
Mix a little dish soap in a bucket and gently scrub both sides with a soft brush.
-
Rinse again and let it air dry before popping it back in.
For fixed screens or those too tricky to remove, a damp microfiber cloth and a spray bottle of water/vinegar mix works wonders.
At Zippy’s Windows, we always recommend pairing a professional window clean with a screen clean — the difference is night and day. We can even show you how to keep them tidy between visits.
